Here’s another installment from Vertigo, at this point it should be pretty evident I’m a big fan of DC’s mature readers imprint, and I think it’s warranted, as a lot of the best series of the past 20 or so years have been from there. This series doesn’t stop that trend.

Described before as “Mad Max with antlers”, Sweet Tooth takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where people are slowly dying off, and children are being born as human-animal hybrids. Our main character, Gus, is one such hybrid, as a young boy who has characteristics of a deer. Gus finds himself having nightmares about a large man, who he thinks is coming to kill him, however later the man actually appears to him, a large older man named Jeppard, and he claims he can take him to safety.

I can’t tell any more of the story without spoiling important plot points, but I can say that once you start reading you will not want to stop. Sweet Tooth is a wonderful series, where each issue feels like another leg of a journey with revelations and turns every month.

WHEN?

The series started in September of 2009, and is ongoing monthly.

WHERE

The first volume of the series is currently available in most bookstores, collecting the first five issues. The second collection will be available in December of this year (2010), collecting issues six through eleven. The single issues may be found online or at your local comic shop.
